How This Book Came About

T his book was conceived out of a deep conviction that the real wealth of the United States is spiritual, more than material, and that the strength of this country stems from the nations democratic heritage, which is inculcated in the lives of its citizens in their youth and in their homes. Families are nations in miniature and it is within the count-less homes of decent, hard-working families that one must look for the glory of America. Within those homes one will find the forces of deep religious principle at work, the spirit of thrift and enterprise, respect for opportunity and for in-dividual accomplishment.

The book itself is the story of a single family, the Eisen-hower family. This family, with its five living brothers, illus-trates how Americans born in relative poverty may rise in an atmosphere of freedom to whatever success their talents per-mit: this family is an example of the greatness of the Ameri-can heritage.

Only because the book attempts to demonstrate this truth have the five brothers of the Eisenhower family consented to cooperate by candidly answering many questions, put to them in interviews in their homes in Washington, Missouri, Illinois, Washington, D. C. and Pennsylvania. Their answers, separately obtained, form a composite biography which in-cludes the story of their father and mother, whom they honor, and their brother, now gone, whom they mourn. The story is told mostly in their own words. The author has con-tributed just those words necessary to make the lives of the Eisenhowers, compiled from the interviews, a coherent family narrative.
