FOR the casual newspaper reader to understand such everyday events in the Middle East as the recent army coup in Syria and the Soviet Unions renewed propaganda attack on Iran it is almost indispensable to have some knowledge of the complex and tragic history of the Arab states and their near neighbors. First published in Great Britain, the book was an outgrowth of a course of lectures that the author delivered to British students at the Middle East center for Arab Studies. In his introduction to the British edition, Mr. Kirk remarked that the lectures were intended to give students a "general grounding in Middle East history and current affairs to assist in fitting them for active careers in that region but not to make them historical specialists." His service to his students and to those who now will read his lectures in book form was that he condensed into very small space a very great deal of Middle Eastern history. His bibliography shows that he has drawn his material from more than fifty authorities, some of whom have written classics on the Middle East.
