This document provides specific installation instructions and other information you should know before you install and use the printing-system software. The installation instructions are for the following operating systems:

WHO NEEDS THIS SOFTWARE?

All users require this printing-system software. Network clients need the installation CD, or the name of the appropriate network directory, to install the software on their individual workstations.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The following are compatible system requirements for Windows and Macintosh:

CD-ROM or DVD drive, or Internet connection

Dedicated universal serial bus (USB 1.1 or 2.0) connectivity port, or network connection

Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008: 220 MB of available hard-disk space

Mac OS X: 150 MB of available hard disk space

OVERVIEW OF THE PRINTING-SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The CD that is included with the product has software for Windows operating systems and Apple Macintosh systems. For more information about a particular printer driver or software component, see the associated online help.

Network administrator software components

HP Web Jetadmin

Network administrators can use HP Web Jetadmin to configure and manage HP products across a variety of operating systems.

NOTE : HP Web Jetadmin is not included on the software CD. Network administrators can download the HP Web Jetadmin software at the following Web site:

HP Utility for Mac OS X

Network administrators can use the HP ،،،،،،،،Utility for Macintosh OS X V10.4 and later to configure and manage HP products from the computer. The printing-system software CD-ROM includes the HP ،،،،،،،،Utility as part of the driver install.

HP Driver Deployment Utility for Windows operating systems

The printing-system software CD includes the HP ،،،،،،،،Driver Deployment Utility as one of the links. Network administrators can use this utility to create a custom printer-driver installation package that includes organization-specific components. Select the components from the printing-system software CD. If the selected printer drivers support preconfiguration, you have the option to preconfigure the printer-driver settings. Upon completion, the driver deployment utility produces an executable file (*.EXE) and a *.CAB file. Use these files to install the preconfigured printer drivers on client machines. This utility supports silent, batch operations. To gain access to the driver deployment utility, expand the Documentation and Support list on the main screen of the installer, On the second screen, click the Admin Software button, and then select the Driver Deployment Utility link.

Update Now

If you have modified the configuration of the product since installation, the driver can be automatically updated with the new configuration in environments that support bidirectional communication. In the Printers and Faxes folder, right-click the printer and select Properties. On the Device Settings tab, click Automatic Configuration, and then select Update Now. This automatically captures the new configuration in the driver.

A printer driver is a software program that other software programs use to gain access to the product features. Typically, you install one printer driver for each product. The printing-system software CD that came with your product includes the following printer driver:

III. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

In a Windows environment, the CD setup or installation software detects the version of the operating system that you are running. The software is installed in the language that you select. For example, if you are running an English version of Windows and have the language preference set to Spanish, the installation utility installs the Spanish version of the printing software for the appropriate Windows version.

WINDOWS INSTALLATION OPTIONS

The following methods are available for installing printer drivers and software components.

Install Now . This method installs the drivers and software. Recommended for most users.

Advanced Install Options . Provides flexibility for installing your choice of drivers and software. Recommended for advanced users and system administrators.

NOTE : Connecting the product to the computer using a USB cable before installing software, also called “Plug and Play,” is not recommended. See the installation guide for more information.
